Cancellation and Non-attendance Policy

Career Development Service (CDS) Policy for Missed Events, Appointments, and Internship Interviews and Cancellation procedure

Policy for Missed Events, Appointments and Internship Interviews, and Cancellation Procedure

There are a number of reasons that the Career Development Service (CDS) requires attendance at all pre-booked events and appointments and keeps a record of those who do not attend. These include:

  • helping us to run a more efficient service by ensuring that booked events and appointments are attended
  • encouraging and emphasising the importance of professional behaviour in employability contexts
  • reputational risk to university when external speakers are involved (such as alumni, employers, organisations etc)

Please note we have separate policies regarding missed ‘employer led events’, other CDS sessions and appointments, and Internships (see below). These policies operate in isolation of each other.

For clarification:
-    An ‘employer led event’ is any event or session organised by the CDS in collaboration with an employer or external organisation, or where employers or external organisations will be in attendance. It is stated on the MyCareers listing for every event if it is an ‘employer led event’
-    Other CDS sessions include CDS workshops, non employer led events, and 1-2-1 appointments

Missed Employer Led Events

Any student missing an external employer led event without cancelling will be blocked from booking onto any further events and excluded from making any further appointments and/or sessions with the CDS
until they have written a letter of apology addressed to the employer to explain why they have missed this event. This is particularly crucial as non-attendance stands to damage the reputation of the university.

If a student misses a second employer led event, they will be required to attend an appointment with a senior member of CDS staff to explain their non-attendance.

Missed CDS Sessions

Any student missing three appointments and/or sessions without cancelling will be excluded from making any further appointments and/or sessions with the CDS.  At this stage you will be required to write to the Director of Student Experience explaining why you have missed these without cancelling.

If a student goes on to miss a fourth CDS session they will be required to attend an appointment with a senior member of CDS staff to explain their non-attendance.

Missed Internship interviews

Any student/graduate who fails to attend a host employer interview for an undergraduate/graduate internship facilitated by the CDS without advance cancellation to both the host and the CDS will be required to write a letter of apology addressed to the employer to explain why they have missed the interview.

The same policy will be applied to any student/graduate who fails to show up at the beginning of their internship without notifying the employer and the CDS (by emailing internships@le.ac.uk).

Failure to do so in either case will lead to exclusion from participation in CDS facilitated internships. This is particularly crucial as non-attendance stands to damage the reputation of the university.

Cancellations and lateness

We appreciate there may be times when unforeseen circumstances mean students cannot attend pre-booked appointments and events. Should this occur you should notify us, ideally giving at least 24 hours’ notice in order that we can re-allocate your place or appointment time to another student. All events and appointments can be cancelled via MyCareers or by telephoning 0116 252 2004.

If you are running late for an appointment please notify us as soon as possible by calling 0116 252 2004. If you are more than five minutes late we may not be able to see you and will request that you re-book for another appointment. If you are more than five minutes late for an event or session, you may not be able to participate in the session.

If you arrive for an event more than 15 minutes late or if you arrive for an appointment after the allotted time we will consider it to be missed.

If you are ill or have a long term condition OR you are no longer on your course of study then please let us know.
