This is fine; if mixing with other people is not for you do not force yourself to do it.  Just let people know that this is what you prefer. 

Remember; most courses expect people to take part in group work and assume that students will work with each other informally too. 

It is important for teaching and halls of residence staff to know if this is unpleasant or frightening for you.  Then they can help you work out what strategies and arrangements will help address this issue.
