In 2018, the School of History, Politics and International Relations (HyPIR) at Leicester offered the first Sanctuary Scholarships for accredited distance learning in the UK. There are currently 14 Universities of Sanctuary in the UK (including the University of Leicester). Each institution is developing its own approach to facilitating access to higher education for displaced people. Sanctuary Scholarships, where offered, tend to focus on campus-based learning. Whilst these scholarships are to be welcomed and encouraged, the growth of distance learning in UK higher education sector is, so far, an untapped opportunity to widen access to those who have been displaced and continue to face serious barriers to access education. Higher education is a source of personal development and a public good in any context. For those who are seeking sanctuary, in low resource environments or crisis and conflict situations, it can be transformational. Widening access to higher education for displaced people provides benefits that extend far beyond the individuals who are able to study and their home and host communities. For the University of Leicester, facilitating access to their Politics MA programmes for those seeking sanctuary around the world has provided a unique opportunity for people who have experienced displacement to interact as peers with those who work for governments and international organisations as well as those who would like to in the future. This unique learning community provides Leicester with the potential to offer a distinctive, enriched PGT programme which goes beyond ‘professional development’ and instead offers a genuinely transformative learning experience for all. This workshop will set out the details of HyPIR’s DL scholarships and the lessons learned so far about recruitment, selection, teaching and support.
