Stop Funding Hate works to challenge racism & bigotry by persuading companies to pull advertising from media that incite hatred against minority groups.

The campaign is driven by an online movement of people from across UK society, who are committed to challenging all forms of hatred and discrimination by using their power as consumers.

While there is still a long way to go, since Stop Funding Hate was launched, there has been a big drop in the number of anti-migrant front pages in the UK press. The Daily Mail has changed its editor and attempted to “detoxify” its coverage. The Daily Express also has a new editor who has acknowledged past failures and committed to ending anti-migrant stories.

Stop Funding Hate is now working to bring about longer-term change by sharing the lessons of the campaign, both in the UK and internationally, and by building support for “ethical advertising” as a mainstream business ethics issue.

Richard Wilson is a writer, human rights activist and co-founder of Stop Funding Hate. In this talk, he will outline some of the key successes and lessons of the campaign so far.
