As a University of Sanctuary and a supporter of widening access to Higher Education for sanctuary students (forced migrants), the University of Leicester will be putting on the following workshop to mark the second World Access to Higher Education Day (WAHED).

Breaking barriers: Creating pathways into, through and beyond Higher Education for sanctuary students

This workshop will give participants the opportunity to explore practical barriers which sanctuary students face when accessing HE, not only in terms of gaining access to a degree programme, but also on their journey through and beyond HE (areas which are often neglected).
These three stages of their journey will then be examined from the perspective of different barriers, including those related to: English language provision; finance/funding; recognition of previous qualifications; mental health issues (including trauma); and practical daily stressors such as those related to housing and the progress of immigration cases. Participants will have an opportunity to consider the barriers that exist in their own institutional context, and then move towards suggesting potential solutions.

This workshop is open to anyone with an interest in this area, whether you already work with forced migrants, are thinking of doing so in the future or perhaps you are a forced migrant yourself. We hope to attract a good mix of participants from the University of Leicester, De Montfort University, FE colleges, local services and voluntary organisations.
