The female ‘overseers’ in the Nazi concentration camps were responsible for much of the daily violence that took place inside. Ravensbrück, the largest concentration camp for women within Germany, and its subcamp Neubrandenburg, will be the focus of Johannes Schwartz’s talk. Schwartz will discuss the female guards’ scope for action beyond the official ban within the camp on “any mistreatment of the prisoners”, and show that, in common with their male colleagues, many of the women took the opportunity to exercise unconstrained violence.
