The Public Engagement for Researchers (PhDs/ECRs) session will provide an overview of what public engagement (PE) means within a university setting. It will also provide guidelines on how best to plan research-related PE projects.

Dr Marie Nugent completed a Genetics BSc Hons at Kings College London, then went on to complete a PhD in Genetics at the University of Leicester. She took part in many engagement and outreach projects whilst studying which inspired her to move into science communications. Marie spent just over a year at Mars Petcare working in the Science Engagement and Communications team at the WALTHAM Centre for Pet Nutrition, the fundamental science research facility for the company, where her role focused on implementing a strategy to improve engagement with key customers within and outside the business. Given her passion for opening up research and education to the public, and realising that her interests lay closer to biomedical and health research, she took on the role of Public Engagement Manager for the College of Medicine, Biological Sciences and Psychology. Her role is to ensure that researchers are supported and equipped to do a range of engagement activities that will ultimately improve Leicester’s teaching and research, build trust and allow a closer alignment between the University and the public. #dcweek
