Understanding the behaviour of proteins in health - and how perturbations cause disease - provides insight into key processes supporting life at the molecular level and allows us to develop new treatment strategies.

Research into a group of diseases known as the serpinopathies, that include inherited forms of emphysema, liver cirrhosis and dementia, has put these principles into practice. Whilst the serpinopathies are fascinating but rare diseases, the findings have important and wide-ranging implications.
