Professor C L Paul Thomas will explore the science of breath based diagnosis with examples drawn from current studies involving mass casualty triage, stress detection and current clinical studies being run in partnership with the University of Leicester. Research has established and developed the science and technology of breath analysis which offers a faster and cheaper way for medical tests. There is also proposed research to monitor astronaut health on future missions to the Moon or Mars through breath analysis and it is possible that in the future your visit to your GP will involve a breath test to diagnose your condition.

Paul gained a PhD at the Department of Instrumentation and Analytical Science, UMIST. He is past president of the International Society of Ion Mobility Spectrometry, and has served on the editorial boards of the Royal Society of Chemistry's Analyst and Springer's International Journal of Ion Mobility Spectrometry.

This lecture is sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry.
