Current pressures on the social care system are unprecedented, at least in recent decades.

Public expenditure has not kept up with rising need, while society’s expectations continue to grow. Rapid population ageing adds to the perceived future ‘burden’. Lack of awareness about how social care is currently organised, and especially about how it is funded, creates both uncertainty and political heat. Some of the enormous challenges facing the NHS today are also blamed on failures in social care. So what are the solutions? And what, in particular, can research evidence offer so as to shape policy, support practice and, ultimately of course, improve individual lives?
