Many people want to know more about the place where they live, or where their ancestors lived, and often their first port of call is Google, and sites such as Wikipedia. How much is there is often a matter of luck, but in many cases the information they seek is available within the published volumes of the Victoria County History (VCH).

Leicestershire VCH Trust is organising a Wikipedia edit-a-thon on Saturday 21 November, to be held from 10am in the David Wilson Library at the University of Leicester. Volunteers will be creating or editing Wikipedia entries to add more information about the fascinating history of some of Leicestershire’s towns and villages from printed and online VCH volumes. A Wikimedia Trustee will provide all the technical training necessary, and a historian will help with any historical queries which may arise. You will need to bring your own laptop (or other device). By the end of the day (3pm), you will be a trained Wikipedia editor, and able to contribute to other Wikipedia entries in your own time. Lunch will be provided (free). The event is part of a nationwide festival of the humanities, involving many universities across the country.
