Hidden Hearing Loss

Hearing ability is usually assessed using the pure tone audiogram, which measures the sensitivity of the ear to quiet tones at different frequencies. However, recent animal experiments suggest that noise exposure and / or ageing can cause damage to the synapses between hair cells in the cochlea and auditory nerve fibres, without affecting sensitivity to quiet sounds. This hearing loss, although “hidden” from standard clinical tests, may have significant effects on hearing ability.
