Is academic criminology becoming more socially and politically irrelevant? If so, why is a subject area that has grown exponentially over the last four decades making such limited contribution to public policy? This lecture addresses this question and calls for a more ‘joined up’ criminology that is able to link theory, methods and policy in order to produce a criminology that is both coherent and useful. Taking examples of some of the most influential criminologists in the English speaking world this lecture aims to show how poor theorisation, inappropriate methods and a lack of policy relevance have come to undermine the development of a public criminology.
