World-renowned social scientist and leading economist, Professor Herbert Gintis, will deliver a public lecture on 15 October 2014 at 5pm in Rattray Lower Ground Floor Lecture Theatre. Herbert Gintis will outline how behavioural sciences can be united by core principles and a common understanding of human behaviour.

Herbert Gintis, MA Mathematics from Harvard University and Ph.D. Economics from Harvard University, holds an array of prestigious positions; Professor of Economics at Central European University, Visiting Professor at University of Siena, External Professor at Santa Fe Institute and Emeritus Professor of Economics at University of Massachusetts. A leading contributor to all of the social sciences, Gintis strongly believes that cross discipline research is key for the advancement of social science. He says: ‘The disarray of the various social sciences is scandalous and deeply unscientific. This situation is fostered by the feudal nature of the academic disciplines, each of which encourages hostility to and isolation from the others. The future of social science, however, lies in strong trans-disciplinary research.’

Professor Sanjit Dhami of the Department of Economics comments: ‘Professor Gintis offers a radical and path-breaking framework for unifying all the social sciences, and remarkably, in each of these social sciences, he has been a leading contributor. This is a fantastic opportunity to listen to one of the greatest living social scientists whose contribution is simply mind-boggling.’
