When Melissa Reid and Michaela Connolly were arrested in Peru for apparently trafficking cocaine media responses fell into two categories. Either they were 'victims' who were forced into trafficking by gangsters, or capable 'volunteers' who made a rational decision to make money from trafficking. This seminar draws on interviews with women drug mules to look at the reality of women's involvement in drug trafficking as mules. Drawing on recent theoretical developments in narrative criminology, this seminar demonstrates that neither category ('victim' or 'volunteer') accurately describes women's involvement in trafficking.
