The Dickens on Screen Project are pleased to announce the first of this semester's screenings: the classic 1958 version of A Tale of Two Cities starring Dirk Bogarde as Sydney Carton.

Despite being one of the most widely read of Dickens novels A Tale of Two Cities has been adapted less often than many of his novels - yet Dickens' story of revolution, love, doubles, self sacrifice and class has had a profound cultural legacy.

Indeed its cinematic influence was seen only two years ago in Christopher Nolan's 2012 film 'The Dark Knight Rises'. Inspired by Dickens novel from the very beginning of the script writing process Nolan utilized many of its character relationships, themes and plot lines to underpin his film: A debt Nolan openly acknowledged not just in interviews but also on screen by having one character quote directly from the novel at the films conclusion.

So we are proud to present this free screening of the classic 1958 version for Dickens and film fans alike to enjoy. The screening will be briefly introduced by Alice Turner from the School of English who will highlight some of the novel and film's themes. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Dickens on Screen Project was founded to provide easy access to educational screenings of Dickens adaptations for students and staff.
