One of the most unusual detective stories of the twentieth century, Josephine Tey’s The Daughter of Time (1951), features an investigation into the life and alleged crimes of Richard III by a bed-bound detective. Tey’s book is one of several accounts to challenge the villainous reputation of Richard established in the Tudor histories and Shakespeare’s drama. This talk will contextualise Tey’s novel in relation to both historical perceptions of Richard, and to the genre of detective fiction.

Mary Ann Lund lectures in the School of English at the University of Leicester. She has published widely on writing, religion and medicine in the English renaissance and has appeared on Radio 4’s In Our Time. Victoria Stewart is a Reader in Modern and Contemporary Literature at the University of Leicester and has published extensively on the representation of the First and Second World Wars in both fiction and autobiography.
