After the huge success of Parade’s End, Ford’s money was lost in the Great Depression. During the 1930s he barely survived on a dollar a day, and whatever he could grow in his Provence garden. Yet he was happily unmarried to his last partner, the young Jewish-American painter Janice Biala, and when he died in her arms in 1939, she was inconsolable. Martin Stannard, who is researching a new biography of Ford, will draw on Biala’s unpublished letters to her brother Jack Tworkov to present an account of her daily life with "an old man mad about writing".

Martin Stannard is Professor of Modern Literature at the University of Leicester. His two volume biography of Evelyn Waugh (1986,1992) was warmly received in the UK and America, as was his life of Muriel Spark (2009). Currently he leads an £800,000 AHRC project to produce the complete works of Evelyn Waugh using digital humanities technology.
