Centromeres are the regions on chromosomes where kinetochores (protein machines that direct chromosome segregation) assemble. Primary DNA sequence is not supreme in dictating the location of these active centromeres. Instead ‘epigenetic’ cues promote the assembly of specialised chromatin on which kinetochores are built. We aim to identify and characterise these features.
