The Dickens on Screen project are proud to present an opportunity to watch David Lean's double Oscar-winning version of the Charles Dickens classic Great Expectations. Filmed in 1946 but still regarded by many critics as 'the greatest Dickens adaptation' this is a rare chance to see on the big screen a film that was to be a huge influence both on Dickens's studies and on cinema. Indeed some critics have argued that without Lean's Great Expectations Billy Wilder might never have been inspired to make his treble Oscar-winning Sunset Boulevard.

The screening will be introduced by Katie Bell from the School of English, a PhD researcher whose work focuses on Dickens and his ongoing influence on the Gothic and Gothic novels
