Talented Leicester athlete Nick Cummins is set to tackle the competition in the Wheelchair Rugby World Championships, taking place in Sydney, Australia between 5 – 10 August.

Nick, who is currently studying for his PhD with our School of History, Politics and International Relations, has been selected by Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby as part of the 12 strong team.

Nick’s sporting achievement has been supported by a Sports Scholarship provided by the Sport and Active Life team at the University of Leicester, which are specifically designed for student athletes to continue developing and excelling in their sporting careers during their time at university.

Nick said: “Getting selected into the squad that is going to the World Championships is one of the high points of my career in wheelchair rugby so far. I feel that this selection is a testament both to my own hard work and to the fantastic level of support and expertise that the University of Leicester has provided to me through my Sports Scholarship. We are definitely on an upward trajectory as a squad and there's no doubt in my mind that we have a great chance of success in Sydney.”

The team of 12 includes a balance of youth and experience - with five athletes, including Nick, making their World Championship debuts and many veterans returning.

GB Wheelchair Rugby is currently ranked 5th in the world and are the reigning European Champions.
