Students will be given the unique opportunity to gain insights into the modern judiciary system from the Rt Hon Sir Terence Etherton, Master of the Rolls and second most senior judge in the United Kingdom, who has been announced as the new President of the University of Leicester Law Society (LULS) for 2018.

Following the success of Lord Neuberger as LULS President last year, the society wanted to appoint a President who would continue the tradition of championing the future of the University of Leicester’s Law School and its students.

Gabriella Ezeani, Chairperson for the University of Leicester Law Society, said: “LULS has committed itself to pursuing diversity as our core value for the 2017-18 academic year. Sir Terence Etherton has exemplified this throughout his career and we can think of no one better to be our president.”

Sir Terence Etherton studied History and Law at Cambridge before being called to the bar in 1974. He was appointed a high court judge in 2001, Chairman of the Law commission in 2006, and Lord Justice of Appeal and member of the Privy Council in 2008. In 2013, he was appointed Chancellor of the High court and in 2016, Sir Terence Etherton succeeded Lord Dyson as the Master of the Rolls, becoming the United Kingdom’s second most senior Judge.

Sir Terence will visit Leicester Law School on 9 March 2018 to deliver a keynote lecture on the topic of ‘Law and Injustice- Legal Reaction to the Holocaust and Human Rights Revolutions’ and to judge the final of its senior mooting competition.
