Latest Shanghai Ranking places Leicester in top 30 UK universities

A global ranking of universities has placed Leicester among the top 30 institutions in the UK.

Leicester has made a significant rise in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) league table, also known as the Shanghai Ranking. The University has been placed 201-300 in the world compared to 301-400 in 2017, and putting the University at 22-28 in the UK.

The rankings also reveal that Leicester is placed 34th in the world for clinical medicine out of over 2000 medical schools. It ranks 6th in UK, the highest placed outside of London, Oxford and Cambridge.

The Shanghai Ranking ranks the top 500 universities across the world, based on six key indicators:

  • The number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals (the Fields Medal is a prize awarded to mathematicians under 40 at the International Congress of the International Mathematical Union, a meeting that takes place every four years)
  • The number of Highly Cited Researchers
  • The number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science
  • The number of articles indexed in Science Citation and other Indices
  • Per capita performance

The ranking places the University ahead of some Russell Group Universities, highlighting its position as a leading UK University committed to maintaining the very best research, outstanding teaching and learning.

Although 1200 universities are ranked, only the top 500 are published, representing the significant global recognition of Leicester’s academic and research excellence.
