First year undergraduate student Hawa Mansaray, 19, who is studying Psychology at the University, has become a published author after writing a children’s book called the ‘The Tale of Frankie Fox and Terry Toad’, which is available to purchase worldwide in hard copy and eBook format through several major retailers including Amazon and WHSmith.

The book was officially launched in June 2014 at the Bacon College in London with 150 guests attending, and it will also be exhibited at two major events in Spain and Germany this autumn.

Hawa said: “My main incentive and motivation is my family – my younger siblings in particular. It was important to me to be able to do something they can look at and be proud of. I believe this book is unique because it is a ‘choose your own destiny’ story for a very young age demographic of 4-10years.”

Alongside studying, Hawa operates as a social entrepreneur and her endeavours have been supported through the University’s Career Development Service where she has been able to gain access to business training and funding.

She added: “Through my involvement with the Enterprise Team in the Career Development Service here at Leicester, I was introduced to UnLtd who provide funding to support social impact projects and I was fortunate enough to secure £2,000 towards costs”.

Susan Root, Enterprise Project Officer at the University, said: “We would like to congratulate Hawa on the launch of her book, she has made a great start to university life, exploiting opportunities and developing strong business acumen in the process. She is a first year, first class student who possesses the key skills and attributes required to become a successful entrepreneur."

A percentage of the book’s profits will be going to support The National Literacy Trust (NLT) – a national charity dedicated to raising literacy levels in the UK.

‘The Tale of Frankie Fox and Terry Toad’ is available to order through the University's bookshop.
