£70,000 cheque presentation to Cardiovascular Research Centre

A donation for £70,000 will be presented to the University Monday 12 May in support of our world-class Cardiovascular Research Centre (CRC) at Leicester’s Glenfield Hospital.

The presentation from local charity Heartsearch will be made to Professor Nilesh Samani (pictured), Head of the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences at the University and Director of the Leicester National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Unit in Cardiovascular Disease.

Cardiovascular disease is the UK’s biggest killer. It causes one in three deaths in this country and kills more than 198,000 people in the UK every year. Each day, in the East Midlands alone, nine people die prematurely of heart disease and every nine minutes somebody dies of a heart attack.

This transformational gift will establish a Research Fund to benefit and support the progressive work of Professor Samani and his team.

Completed in 2012, the £12.6 million CRC was made possible by the generosity and philanthropic support of hundreds of individuals and organisations to the CRC Appeal including an unprecedented £7 million gift from The John and Lucille van Geest Foundation.
