Hurdler takes silver at BUCS outdoor athletics finals

Criminology student and Gold Sports Scholar, Lucy Hatton (pictured) won a silver medal in the 100m hurdles at the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) outdoor athletics finals in Bedford this weekend.

Lucy qualified in the fastest time in both the opening rounds and then the semi-finals, before being pipped at the post by Karla Drew from Sheffield Hallam.

Speaking about the day, the first year student said: “This competition was my first race into the outdoor season; I was definitely feeling the pressure as I wanted to do well for the University because of the amount of support given to me and also for myself, to give me comfort that all of the training is worth it.

“I was in the third qualifying heat and in both the first and second heats there was an instant disqualification for false starting. At this point I couldn't feel my arms; I really did not want to be in that situation.

“And then before I knew it, I had crossed the line for my race, the time I got made me the fastest qualifier going into the semi-finals. Then in the warm-up area just before my semi-final race, I smashed a hurdle down. At the time this felt like nothing, however sitting in the call up room I could feel my left quadricep pulling and I was nervous.

“I was very happy to come second in the final as I know that my competitor is a fantastic athlete; however the race did feel messy on my behalf so I was a little disappointed. I hit two hurdles which did annoy me, but to come away now and think that was first competition for the 2014 outdoor season, I am very happy.

“The support throughout the whole day from the University was fantastic, I was getting messages which did really help me and put a smile on my face. The scholarship has allowed me train as often as I have because I have been able to financially support myself and now I have the fire in my belly for next year to come back with the gold.”

The University’s Gold and Silver Sports Scholarships are awarded to students with stellar prospects in a range of sports.

Matt Weir, Assistant Director of Sport at the University of Leicester added: “This is a great achievement for Lucy and the University. We are always really proud of our students’ sporting successes.”
