Department of Chemistry secures £60,000 grant for outreach programme

Our Department of Chemistry has secured a grant of £60,000 from the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) to develop and run an innovative four year outreach programme with local schools starting this autumn.

The project will develop new approaches to teaching, learning and curriculum enrichment known as Context Based Learning (CBL), which will give participants the opportunity to experience what it is like to be a professional chemist.

Participating pupils will work on activities based on major research questions currently being addressed in the Department’s research activities and that have an impact on our everyday lives e.g. How clean is the air that we breathe? What role does organic chemistry play in keeping us healthy?

The aim of the project is to give pupils a range of hands-on exciting activities, encourage pupils from groups underrepresented in higher education to consider degree level study and to establish the effectiveness of CBL in delivering outreach activities.
