A series of 12 vertical steel plates capturing the story of Richard lll’s death will be the new work in Leicester’s revamped Cathedral Gardens.

The unique and poignant portrayal of the last Plantagenet king’s final days has been selected from a shortlist and will be unveiled in the city in the spring.

Created by London-based design practice Dallas Pierce Quintero (DPQ) , the design echoes the gravestones in Cathedral Gardens and reflects Richard III’s final moments in battle at Bosworth, the moving of his body to Leicester, his burial and, finally, rediscovery by archaeologists from the University.

Leicestershire County Council has commissioned the new work of art - provisionally titled Towards Stillness - as part of its £250,000 contribution to the redevelopment of the gardens, which has now started in partnership with the cathedral and city council.

  • The Dig for Richard III was led by the University of Leicester, working with Leicester City Council and in association with the Richard III Society. The originator of the Search project was Philippa Langley of the Richard III Society.
