Taiwanese students organise Alumni Award Celebration event in Taipei

A group of international Taiwanese students who were unable to attend the graduation ceremony at the University organised their own Alumni Award Celebration event on Saturday 25 January in Taipei.

The International Office organised 11 phone video messages with members of staff including Dave Hall, Professor Simon Lilley and Julie Zhu, which were played in a PowerPoint during the event.

Julie, International Officer at the International Office, is instrumental in marketing and recruiting in Taiwan and liaising with current international students and international student societies.

While in Taiwan in January attending education exhibitions, two of our Leicester graduates approached her and mentioned their idea for holding an Award Celebration event in Taipei for Taiwanese students who were unable to return to Leicester for the graduation ceremony.

Jen-Pai Yu (Andrew), an MSc Criminology graduate (2012-2013), said: “It was truly a good year for Taiwanese students who went abroad to study for the first time. Apart from the advanced knowledge massively absorbed from the well planned lectures, the student life in the UK was linguistically, culturally and philosophically inspiring as well as eye-opening.

"We strongly feel that the experience of the past year has firmly connected Taiwanese students together as a group. Though we couldn't go back to UK to attend the ceremony for all sorts of reasons, we unintentionally thought about each other at the same time just right before 24 January and wondered, 'why don't we get a Taiwanese celebration together?’.

"Students who attended the celebration in Taipei were just totally shocked by the video clips sent from UK and local people - we feel as if we are loved so much in the UK. It was amazing in terms of studying, the land, the people and Leicester city itself. Leicester has become our second homeland and we are looking forward to visiting again in the future.”

Ya-Chih Cheng (Esther), an MSc Marketing graduate (2012-2013), said: “I think I am the happiest girl in the world because I met all the Taiwanese students at the University in 2012/13. During my time in Leicester, I met a lot of students from Taiwan, and all of us helped each other in our studying life.

"Andrew and I decided to hold a graduate party for all Taiwanese students who have studied at the University of Leicester in 2012/13. We thought that now would be the best time to reach others and to share information about our new lives. We also wanted to provide a memorable graduate party to all the students who could not attend the graduation ceremony at the University. Thanks to all Taiwanese students who came to the party - we hope everybody enjoyed it!"
