English Language Teaching Unit facilitates first student research festival for non-native speakers

The English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) Research Festival, where our international students had the opportunity to practice their presentation skills to fellow students and academics, was held on Wednesday 19th February in Fraser Noble Hall.

The event was for non-native speaker international research students who were looking to gain experience, skills and confidence in giving academic presentations. There were 14 poster presentations given on research from a wide variety of disciplines.

International research students presented to an audience of peers and academic staff in an informal and friendly atmosphere.  Presenters commented afterwards that it had been a great opportunity to develop their academic presentation skills and gain experience explaining, defending and discussing their work.

In addition, three participants received awards for outstanding presentations:

  • 1st Prize: Kamla Al Salmani (Dept. Cancer Studies & Molecular Medicine)
  • Runner Up: Dashne A Sadeeq (School of English)
  • Students’ Choice: Hishyar Najeeb (Dept of Cancer Studies & Molecular Medicine)

The Students’ Choice was voted for by the audience of pre-sessional international students, and two awards made by a panel of judges. However, the judges also highlighted the high standard of presentations from all the presenters.
