Leicester undergraduate students in the UK final of the CIMA Global Business Challenge 2013

A team of four University of Leicester students has been shortlisted from 56 other teams to take part in the national stage of the CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) Global Business Challenge this year!

Team ‘Precision’ will have the opportunity to showcase their talent in business management at the UK final in June when they will compete against 3 other teams from the University of Glasgow, University of Abertay Dundee and the London Metropolitan University. The winners will then have the opportunity to represent the UK in the global final in South Africa in August, when the best team from each of the 25 participating countries will aspire to be crowned the 2013 champion.

‘We will be attending the final in London on the 14th and really plan to go all out and win’ said Matthew Woodcock, team leader of ‘Precision’. Matthew (BA Management Studies), Shanara Hibbert (BA English), Carmen Wong (BA Management Studies) and Regan Moore (BA Management Studies) are all currently in their second year at the University of Leicester.

They altogether analysed the business case study material and prepared an outstanding 3,000-word report giving recommendations about the financial, ethical and other internal and external issues outlined in the scenario.

At the national stage next month each of the four shortlisted teams will present themselves with a 2-minute video, deliver a 20-minute presentation based on their report and engage in a Q&A session with a panel of judges. The event will also be an opportunity for the attending students to network with CIMA professionals and business experts from leading national and world organisations such as Marks & Spencer’s, Siemens and Unilever.

Elena Hristozova, Talent Academy Intern from the Career Development Service has mentored team ‘Precision’ throughout the competition and will continue to support them during the next stages of the challenge. Ms Hristozova said of the team’s achievement: ‘They had put a tremendous amount of work. It is their ambition and commitment to success that has enabled them to produce such a high quality report. Their efforts deserve every success and my colleagues and I wish them the best of luck at the UK final!’

This year the University of Leicester had an exceptionally high engagement with 9 teams entering this competition. The participating Leicester teams comprised of students from the departments of Economics, Management, Maths, English, Engineering, Law and Medical Sciences.

The CIMA Global Business Challenge has expanded each year, having 6,159 participants from 14 different countries in 2010, to engage 13,824 students across 23 countries in 2012.
