University of Leicester rugby teams crowned Varsity champions in double win at the Tigers Stadium on 21 March

The University of Leicester Women’s and Men’s first rugby teams (pictured) were both triumphant in their matches against De Montfort University at the Tigers Stadium on Wednesday 21 March 2013.

Every year, over 5000 people flock to watch the face-off in the annual Varsity Cup Match at Leicester Tigers Welford Road stadium. The rugby head-to-head has been held at Welford Road since 2002, with the women's match being added two years later.

University sports events run all day, featuring everything from rowing to football, with the rugby showdown providing the final showpiece occasion and confirming the title of this year's Varsity champions.

This year, the Women’s team (pictured, left) set the standard, winning 27-0 in what was their tenth consecutive Varsity win against their local rivals. As the score line suggests, the game was dominated by Leicester from start to finish and reflected their organisation and discipline, especially at the break-down.

The Men’s (pictured, right) game was expected to be a much closer contest, despite Leicester competing at a much higher level in the British Universities & College Sport (BUCS) competitions. Leicester were the eventual winners having relied on their solid defence and fast, counter-attacking play when they had the ball in hand. As the game grew, Leicester began to wear down their opposition and further take control of the game, ensuring a comfortable 26-3 victory.
