Report found children "motivated", "eager to learn" and "cared for in a nurturing and supportive environment"

The University Nursery recently had their first Ofsted inspection and was awarded a ‘Good’ grade. The inspection was unannounced and the grade was based on the inspector’s observations of children and staff, and interviews with management, staff and parents. She also examined documentation including policies and improvement plans as well as the recording of children’s learning and development.

The purpose of the inspection was to ascertain how well the nursery meets the needs of the range of children who attend and contributes to their well-being as well as the effectiveness of leadership and management.

In particular the Inspector commented on the following;

  • Children are motivated, keen and eager to learn. They are provided with stimulating and enjoyable first-hand learning experiences by staff, who know them well and have a good understanding of how children learn.
  • The thoughtfully planned playroom creates an enabling environment for children to promote their independence and to engage children in purposeful play. Children benefit from a wide range of play materials to support their learning and development.
  • Children are cared for in a nurturing and supportive environment. They are happy and form close bonds and secure attachments with all practitioners at the nursery. Practitioners praise children's achievements, which effectively promotes their confidence and self-esteem.
  • Leadership and management is strong and there is a clear motivation to develop the nursery in order to improve opportunities for children's learning.

The facility was acquired by the University in April 2012 but only had a ‘satisfactory’ rating. The staff, led by Carol Crosbie, the University’s Senior Nursery Manager, have worked very hard to develop a quality provision for the children of staff and students. Future plans include a designated outdoor area to allow free and safe access directly from the indoor nursery play areas.  The Nursery is based in the Sports Centre on Wyggeston Drive .

Visits are welcome by prior arrangement. Please call Lucy Hammond on 0116 252 5880 for an appointment.
