Emeritus Professor of Sociology at University of Leicester who helped pioneer sociological studies of sport and leisure

A graduate of the Universities of London and Leicester, Professor Dunning has taught extensively in the USA, Canada, Brazil, Argentina and continental Europe. Along with Norbert Elias, he is one of the pioneers of the sociological study of sport and leisure, having worked in the field since 1959. He has also looked at the problems of violence and civilization, especially sports-related violence.

Dunning has two children, Michael and Rachel. Formerly an active soccer centre-half and cricket-opening batsman, his main sporting involvements now are watching Leicester City and his son’s soccer teams.

Professor Eric Dunning will be presented with an Honorary Doctorate of Letters at this week’s Graduation Ceremony on Wednesday 10 July 2013.
