Embrace Arts to mark Lord Attenborough’s birthday

Embrace Arts and the Phoenix are celebrating Richard Attenborough's birthday

Embrace Arts, based at the Richard Attenborough Centre, is teaming up with the Phoenix to celebrate the 90th birthday of Lord Attenborough on Saturday 17 August from 11am—5pm. The day includes activities for everyone, including two presentations by special guest Michael Attenborough: ‘My Father’ at Embrace Arts at 11:30am, and ‘Richard Attenborough: Film Director and Actor’ at the Phoenix at 2pm.

Whether it’s as one of the soldiers making The Great Escape, Santa Claus, or as a dinosaur mogul in Jurassic Park, Attenborough is a towering presence in cinema: he has also helmed movies such as the Oscar-winning Gandhi and the all-star war epic A Bridge Too Far. He has scooped two Oscars, four BAFTAs and three Golden Globes. Outside of film, he has served as President of RADA and Chancellor of the University of Sussex.

Richard Attenborough actually spent his early life on the University’s campus itself, growing up in College House along with his brother David—his father was Principal of the University College from 1932 to 1951.

The birthday celebrations will also feature talks by New Walk Museum & Art Gallery curators on the Attenborough Collection and by Lord Attenborough portrait artist Bryan Organ, as well as lunchtime music, archive photographs of Lord Attenborough’s times at the University, and a screening of one of his films.

Book in advance for this free event at Embrace Arts or contact our box office on (0116) 252 2455.
