Media student Monika Plaha has scooped a prestigious broadcasting award for her report on skin lightening in the Asian community

Monika Plaha, who is currently studying in the Department of Media and Communication at the University of Leicester, won this year’s Breaking into News with her report on the issue of skin lightening in Asian communities.

The initiative, run in partnership by ITV News and Media Trust, aims to discover new talent and identify top broadcast journalists of the future.

Monika, who has been mentored by ITV Central’s Victoria Davies, was one of nine finalists who were given the opportunity to be mentored by an experienced broadcast journalist to turn their ideas into a news report for their local ITV newsroom.

Their reports were judged by a panel that included senior executives from ITV News and Media Trust.

As the winner Monika will have the opportunity to spend the day with the team producing ITV News at Ten, as well as receiving an iPad to help her with future projects.
