University of Leicester FUTSAL team reaches BUCS Championships for the first time

On Sunday 10th February, FUTSAL became the University’s first team to reach the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) Championships, making them the most successful sporting team in the University’s recent history.

Having finished fourth in the BUCS Midlands Premier League, they were drawn away against a successful York team who had already obtained the Northern Premier League title and looked like strong contenders to win the national tournament too.

Despite being billed as the clear underdogs, Leicester had other plans. A well fought, closely contested tie was separated by a last gasp goal from York with 30 seconds left on the clock as the tie ended 8-7 to the hosts. However, a notable performance came from Leicester’s former New England Revolution star, Zak Boggs who managed to weave some of his magic to score four of the seven goals.

Despite defeat, the strong character and determination shown by the Leicester team was clear to see. The bar of sporting performance seems to be rising at the University of Leicester and the FUTSAL team have set the standard for others to reach.
