University of Leicester alumnus and acclaimed graphic designer, Storm Thorgerson, has died at the age of 69 after a long battle with cancer.

Thorgerson, who graduated from the University of Leicester in 1966 with an undergraduate degree in English and Philosophy, designed album covers for many leading music figures including Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Peter Gabriel and Muse.

His most celebrated design is the iconic cover for Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. The instantly recognisable design, which features a prism spreading a spectrum of colour across a dark background, is widely considered to be one of the greatest album covers of all time.

Storm Thorgerson, deemed ‘the best designer in the world’ by acclaimed science fiction writer Douglas Adams, provided the cover for the 2008 Graduates’ Review, the annual alumni magazine from the University of Leicester, which features am article on Thorgerson on page 10.

Many national media outlets are featuring obituaries and tributes to Storm Thorgerson today. The University of Leicester Alumni Association has also expressed their sadness over the loss of this talented and much celebrated artist.
