Dr Neil Chakraborti discusses whether attacks against alternative subcultures should be classified as hate crimes

Dr Neil Chakraborti (pictured), Reader in Criminology at the University of Leicester, has added his voice to the debate on Greater Manchester Police’s decision to begin recording attacks against alternative subcultures as hate crimes.

Their stance recognizes that goths, heavy metal fans, punks, emos, and those from other subcultures are routinely subjected to prejudice , and that this prejudice has damaging physical and emotional consequences for victims, families, friends and wider communities.

Dr Chakraborti outlines some of the praise and criticism directed at the recent change in policy, as well as explaining the reasons behind his own support for the decision.
