University contributes to important Government report on social mobility

Evidence from the University of Leicester has played an important part in a key Government-commissioned report on social mobility in higher education.

Former Labour MP Alan Milburn published his report University Challenge: How Higher Education Can Advance Social Mobility today. The report looks at how open Universities are to pupils from poorer backgrounds – as well as the outcomes open to students once they leave university.

The report features data submitted by the University which shows that most employers target the universities with the highest proportion of relatively well-off students.

The evidence led Mr Milburn to comment that “there is a vicious cycle as many employers target a relatively narrow pool of universities, increasing the chance of applicants from those universities, which in turn leads to better outcomes for those students”.

He concludes that “the top employers in particular need to broaden the range of universities from which they recruit”.

Mr Milburn’s recommendations will now be considered by the Government.
