The Sri Lanka Guardian reports on the prestigious appointment of a Leicester Law School graduate to the country’s top judicial position.

A couple of months ago we reported that the most senior policemen in Sri Lanka is a Leicester graduate. Now another senior post in that country’s law and justice system has gone to a University of Leicester alumnus.

Shanthi Eva Wanasundera, PC is the 26th Attorney General of Sri Lanka and the first woman to hold this important post. Born in Kurunegala, she had ambitions to enter the legal profession from an early age and was fortunate in winning a scholarship to Canyon del Oro High School in Tucson, Arizona.

Returning to Sri Lanka in the early 1970s she started practising as an Attorney-at-Law and joined the Attorney General’s department in 1979. Since then she has been Acting Attorney General no fewer than 16 times before finally being sworn into the post.

Mrs Wanasundera holds an LLM from our School of Law.
