As the sound of leather on willow fades away for another year, Corey Evans provides an end-of-season report:

After 57 matches, the season has finally finished for the University Staff Cricket Club. It has been another great year for the club, building on the success of the 2010 season.

The 1st XI team, which is in the 1st Division of the Leicestershire Senior Cricket League, finished sixth; however, things could have been different if four games weren’t lost to rain (typical English weather). The standout players for the 1st XI were Surender Mohandass, who made 540 runs, Chris Cottis 468 runs and Ziab Khan 448 runs, while the bowlers were lead by Kyle Thomas who took 38 wickets, with Surender Mohandass showing his all-round abilities by chipping in with 27 wickets.

Our 2nd XI team went through the season undefeated, winning the 3rd Division title and are now promoted to the 2nd Division of the Senior League. The 2nd XI, lead by Yusuf Mohammad, had a number of standout players with Corey Evans making 668 runs and Ankit Mishra making 382 runs, while Kashif Haleem with 30 wickets lead the four-pronged bowling attack which also included Muhammad Shoaib (23 wickets); Muhammad Adnan (27 wickets) and Jean De Beer (25 wickets).

The club also had some success in the LOROS Twenty20 tournament reaching the finals. After defeating the reigning champions (Leicester Caribbeans) in the semi-final, our Twenty20 squad, lead by Taral Naik, fell just short in the final losing to Bharat Sports CC.  It was an awesome effort to get to the finals and it was the first time a 1st Division team had reached the final.

Lastly, our Sunday XI team, lead by William Wise, had many successes over the last five months playing friendly games against teams such as Gumley, Barrowden, Leicestershire Teachers and Hallaton.

We can only hope that the 2012 season will be even more successful.
