University of Leicester researchers have been involved in identifying six gene regions with links to high blood pressure.

The study by the International Consortium for Blood Pressure Genome-Wide Association Studies was co-led by Louise Wain and Professor Martin Tobin from the Department of Health Sciences, together with investigators from Imperial College London and from Rotterdam.

Published in the prestigious journal Nature Genetics, it reports on the identification of gene regions for two types of blood pressure measurement; pulse pressure and mean arterial pressure.

The discovery takes us a step further in determining the causes of high blood pressure, but in the short term they provide a link to biological mechanisms which could be targeted to help prevent heart disease and stroke.
