Dr Corinne Fowler’s Grassroots project has revealed the wonderful diversity of local writers.

Dr Fowler of the School of English has compiled a database of transcultural writing by local Leicestershire authors as part of a project supported by Arts Council England. The project Grassroots: Contemporary Leicestershire Writing aims to promote Leicestershire’s diverse literary cultures, and the new database is now online.

Dr Fowler was astonished at the sheer number of local writers and hopes that the database, which is available online, will increase critical recognition of Leicestershire’s authors and poets – especially those from Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds.

Looking to the future, the next stage of the project will be an online Writers’ Gallery with fifty author pages, and an exhibition about writers. A piece of creative writing about ‘Transcultural Leicester’ has also been commissioned.
