Can a Victorian debutante in the year 2195 find love in the arms of the creepy undead? She can according to Lia Habel, whose debut novel Dearly, Departed came out this week. Combining futuristic technology with Victorian social mores, the book has already picked up great reviews; and the publishers have signed Habel on for a second instalment.

Habel completed her Masters in Museum Studies at the University before returning to her native United States, where she developed a love of 'steampunk' - the imaginative concept of advanced technology based on steam power. She wrote the first draft of Dearly, Departed for her steampunk-loving friends, who encouraged her to submit it for publication.

Dearly, Departed was published this week by Random House, who will also publish the sequel Dearly, Beloved.
