Mariko, who studied in Japan and Paris before moving to the UK in 1995, is a popular local performer who has visited the University of Leicester’s arts centre on a number of occasions. Last week she gave a free recital on Tuesday lunchtime as part of Embrace Arts’ biweekly ‘Soundbites’ series.

Mariko decorated the hall with origami paper cranes and gave a crane to anyone who donated to the Japanese Red Cross appeal, raising a total of £290 for victims of the earthquake and tsunami which struck in March.
