World leading cardiologist wins first Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award

The Vice-Chancellor presents the award to Professor Samani

The evening, held at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, London, was another memorable event. More than 185 alumni and guests attended the dinner which was hosted by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Robert Burgess.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Outstanding Achievement Award to Professor Nilesh Samani. He graduated from the University of Leicester in 1978 with a first class BSc in Medical Sciences, following this with an MBChB (Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery) in 1981 and he received his MD here in 1994. Nowadays he is Head of our Department of Cardiovascular Sciences and widely regarded as a leader in his field

The evening wasn’t billed as an atmospheric, candle-lit soirée, but it turned out that way for a while as, due to a power-cut, the whole place was plunged into darkness. Nevertheless, our valiant diners refused to be downhearted. The Blitz spirit kicked in and everyone banded together, helped to some extent by a compensatory offer of free drinks.

When power was restored, the evening proceeded as planned and a good time was had by all: good food, good wine, good conversation and some folk were even tempted to cut a rug on the dance floor afterwards.
