All that glitters was definitely gold at a recent student conference in the Department of Geology.

Over 120 academics, professionals and students attended the first UK Society of Economic Geologists’ Student Chapter Symposium on Gold at the University of Leicester earlier this month. The University of Leicester Student Chapter of the SEG took on the task of organising the symposium, attracting a number of industry experts and notable researchers as speakers.

For the modern day prospectors out there, the day contained everything you’d ever need to know to find your fortune. There were talks on mineral exploration projects; geochemical analysis of gold deposits; the use of X-ray CT scanning as a non-destructive way of examining samples; and the business of mineral exploration. So there’s a bit more to it than your everyday gold panning.

Full details are available on the Department of Geology news pages.
