Two generations of Leicester academics examine luxury on BBC4

Professor Lin Foxhall

A new two-part history programme The Story of Luxury debuts on BBC4 tonight, as part of the channel’s ‘Luxury’ season, in which Dr Michael Scott explores historical notions of luxury.

The first programme, concentrating on Ancient Greece, features Professor Lin Foxhall from our School of Archaeology and Ancient History. Professor Foxhall is an authority on Ancient Greece and a leading figure in our Tracing Networks project. The programme looks at differing attitudes to luxury in Athens and distinctly less-than-luxurious Sparta.

Professor Foxhall is also the mother of Helen Foxhall Forbes, Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in our School of Historical Studies. And Helen is featured in the second part of the programme next week, which examines notions of luxury in the Middle Ages.

The Story of Luxury is on BBC 4 tonight, Monday 27 June 2011, at 9.00pm, repeated at 12.45am and 3.45am for night owls, and again at 12.25am on Thursday night (Friday morning). There are also BBC HD screenings, at 9.00pm on Tuesday night and 1.30am on Wednesday night (Thursday morning). Or you can watch it on iPlayer.
