Leicester academic is co-author of a prize-winning study revealing how language tests are being misused to achieve policy goals.

Dr Glenn Fulcher of our School of Education teamed up with Professor Fred Davidson from the University of Illinois to look into the use of language tests as instruments of public policy.

Their results revealed that ‘cheap and simple solutions’ are being used to complex problems. Specifically, generic tests are used for multiple purposes to restrict immigration in education and for non-EU spouses.

With their study, researchers aim to demonstrate to policy makers and testing agencies the potentially very serious consequences of their decisions.

For its significant contribution to the field of language testing, the study has also won this year’s Best Paper Award from the International Language Testing Association (ILTA).
